ABOUT ME

Hello, I am Emma Sunnarborg, a Spring of 2022 North Dakota State University graduate, with a B.S. degree in Interior Design and a minor in Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Interior Design has captivated me since a young age. My curiosity for how buildings and layouts come about, how furniture is made, and the wonder of color, magnified as I grew older. The addition of having a natural enjoyment for puzzles and organizing, I knew Interior Design was the avenue I wanted to pursue.

Raised in Rochester, MN, I was immersed in a health-centered culture. I had the opportunity to meet people from all around the world and listen to their stories of what brought them to Mayo Clinic. My heart pained as I listened. Hospitals and hotels become a second home for many. I cannot imagine the difficulty of needing to adjust to a new environment and moving far from familiarity. I always asked myself what I would change or add to Rochester if I had the opportunity. How would I make a hospital feel like a home? What kind of spaces does Rochester need to help distract people from their current state? I saw a need and wanted to help.

Through North Dakota State University’s Interior Design Program, my passion, adoration, and curiosity for commercial, specifically healthcare and hospitality design, has grown. There is an evident need when it comes to effective healthcare design and commercial design as a whole. I have witnessed the impact of great design and the role it plays for patients and family — as well as, those who work in the spaces. Healthcare and hospitality’s people-focused, fast-paced, technological and innovative environment, attracts me. I want to be a part of greater need and picture as an interior designer. I know my future work will greatly benefit and impact those who reside in it.
